The word “glucometer” is a common term for a blood glucose meter. However, the word glucometer actually refers to an early brand name blood glucose meter. The term, “glucometer” continues to be used by some as a generic term. The more accurate term for these devices is a blood glucose meter. The act of checking one’s glucose levels is referred to as self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG)1 or simply blood glucose monitoring. A blood glucose meter is a medical device that measures the level of glucose in one’s blood at points in time when the user chooses to check their glucose. Steps of Home Use Glucose Meter




Wash Your Hands
Before using blood glucose meters, it is standard practice (for the patients) to wash your hands thoroughly using soap and clean water. This is because any traces of food or other substances on your fingers can alter the BGL reading.
Take Blood Sample
The traditional blood glucose meters work by checking your blood sugar level in a drop of blood. This blood sample is collected by pricking your finger using a sterile needle called a lancet. A lancing device is used to hold this needle, keep it sterile until use, and release it for pricking. To collect a blood sample, select a target pricking site.
Then, clean the tip of the finger with an alcohol swab or wipes. This kills all the germs present on the skin. After cleaning, hold the finger and prick with the lancet. Remember to never squeeze the finger too hard. Also, taking a blood sample from the sides of your finger is recommended.
Load the Sample on the Test Strip
Once a drop of blood appears on the puncture site, transfer it to a disposable test strip inserted into a blood glucose meter. This can be done by simply touching the edge of the test strip to the blood drop on your finger.
These test trips come in a container and must only be taken out at the time of use to prevent contamination. As test strips are single-use items like lancets, these must be discarded after one employment. In addition, always check the expiry date on the test strips before using them.
Measurement and Displaying of BGL Reading
The blood glucose meters read the single from the blood sample on the test strip and generate a blood sugar level reading which is then displayed on the screen. The results might take a few seconds to appear.
If the reading does not appear at all, there might be an issue with the battery of your blood glucose meter. Either consider replacing it or use another device.
It’s important to check the expiration date of your test strips. A test strip’s ability to generate an accurate reading weakens after the expiration date.
Store your BGM and test strips at room temperature and in dry spaces.
Although most CGMs do not need calibration, some may require a BGM to calibrate the device.

Helpful Tips for Testing Your Blood Sugar and Caring for Your Meter
Read the directions for your meter and test strips before you use them.
Wash your hands before you check your blood sugar. Food or juice on your fingers could make the meter give you the wrong result.
Use the right test strip for your meter. The meter may not work right or may give you the wrong result if you use the wrong test strip.
Write down your results and the date and time you tested. Do this even if your meter tracks your numbers. Take the results with you when you go to your doctor.
Clean your meter as directed. Some cleaning products may harm your meter.
